Overview
Tunnels across Japan face the serious problem of aging. The number of tunnels more than 50 years old since construction will reach three times the current number in 10 years and about 20 times in 20 years, and defects such as cracking and water leakage are increasingly appearing.
Conventional manual inspection involves traffic control and work at height. This requires careful consideration of the social losses caused by traffic control and of safety during work at height. Moreover, lining defects have had to be assessed manually, qualitatively and subjectively, with long inspection periods and arduous work.
The tunnel inspection vehicle "TC-2" owned by TONOX Co., Ltd. requires neither traffic control nor work at height. By imaging defects on the tunnel lining surface with laser light, it provides objective, quantitative data.
Vehicle Introduction: TC-2
The tunnel measurement vehicle TC-2 is built on a 4-ton truck. Its most important component is the laser unit. The laser scanner in the unit emits a fan-shaped laser beam with a central angle of 120 to 150 degrees and captures the reflected light, making it possible to image defects on the lining surface such as cracks and water leakage points.
It can also measure the lining surface continuously while driving at up to 60 km/h, day or night.
